There are problems with the car. It’s not in perfect condition. HOWEVER, cheap RWD V8 GT car. I reiterate: cheap RWD V8 GT car.

The car is currently on the market for $3000 with a broken steering pump, non-functioning mirror adjusting knob, leaky trunk, leaky headlight, clutch issue, battery issue, and an indeterminate timing belt lifespan.

Cheap RWD V8 GT car.

The car is going to command as much as the asking price in repairs just to make it dependable.

Cheap RWD V8 GT car.

With everything that’s wrong with it, the engine is perfect, the interior is nice, the exterior is perfect. It’s got four wheel disk brakes (business), and the engine is a non-interference engine.

We’re going to offer $1500 in a couple of days.

How much (estimate) in parts and labor?

Around $3000. The clutch and possibly the timing belt are going to be the biggest, maybe $1,500 total. Then there’s the leaky trunk which is probably $500 in repairs. The power steering pump will be about $300. With all the smaller stuff piled on, $3000 is a good estimate.

If the leaky trunk can’t be repaired with less than $30 of weather stripping, run away.

“Clutch issue” needs a better definition, because it could be anything from replacing the cable to a bad throwout bearing.

Timing belt is something I consider a necessity beyond 90k. It’s a belt. It should never be trusted. There’s a reason both my cars have timing chains now. Now, I never had a timing belt go, but I had the timing belt changed and the tensioner flopped around worse than an elephant seal looking for a mate. Just think about it, that goes, and it’s the whole motor in most cases.

Also, from reading your previous post about your test drive, I would offer $1000 max or walk away. Sounds like the power steering rack, not the pump, and if there’s condensation inside the rear window, it could be the window seal going. I would personally run away quickly. The fact that the car didn’t start right away would be the most immediate red flag. Also, frayed seatbelt? Are you looking to own a deathtrap?

Regarding the leaky trunk, worst case scenario, a body shop needs to refit the body panels. The same problem exists on my Accord, and it’s an obvious panel fitment issue since I know what to look for. I didn’t see anything on the Lexus that would indicate the same thing. It’s an old car, I’m willing to believe, for now, that the seal is bad.

I’d call the clutch thing minor for now. After driving it a little bit, the problem went away. However, I wouldn’t forget about it.

Steering was difficult on a gravel surface, which the car was parked on when we got to it. It was okay on the road. The pump was whining though, so I’m to believe it’s just the pump.

The small electrical issues could be blown fuses.

Besides, this isn’t going to be a primary car. It’d be a secondary/project car for a while. Both my dad and I have very reliable cars and we don’t intend to replace them with a broken Lexus.

They may very well take $1500. That car has been on CL for about 3 months. And it is hard as hell to find examples of the SC400 without torn leather seats OR (exclusive or) something wrong with the paint on the exterior. A non-interference motor also change the outlook on the lack of timing belt service. Yes the engine will be saved, but you could break down on 405 for all you know.

All I know is, if you come back and post how you got a clean SC400 for $1500, I will personally knock on every door in Lynnwood and find you and bring you to (kabab) justice.

I can’t speak for HondaBro, but those who have experienced both, it should be easy to identify a bad rack vs a bad pump (unless my anecdotal experience means jack squat, which I’m sure it does).

I am also on board with the other points, but especially the timing chain stuff. I have two timing belts snap on me in my life, and now DD an old pickup with an immortal chain-wielding Toyota 20R motor.
